New Thirty-three Cecils Day award to honor community member

A new award is coming to Binghamton, honoring a holiday that holds a special place in our community.

This year, the Cecils Award will be introduced as part of the annual Thirty-three Cecils Day celebration.

Now in its fourth year, Thirty-three Cecils Day celebrates both the novel Thirty-three Cecils and the city of Binghamton that inspired it.

Inspired by the themes of the novel, the new award recognizes ordinary people who make an extraordinary impact on others.

“The thing about Thirty-three Cecils is these are just normal people that did extraordinary things,” said author Everett De Morier. “And in Binghamton there is so many people that do amazing things. And Cecils Day probably wouldn’t happen anywhere else. Binghamton is just this magical place that embraces things like this.”

Community members can nominate someone who has made an unexpected difference in someone’s life, formed an unlikely friendship, given someone a second chance, or quietly made the Binghamton community better through everyday actions.

Nominations are now being accepted and can be submitted through this link: https://forms.gle/ifp5iJFwdtrwGZ2k9. All nominations must be received by Friday, August 28.

The recipient will be announced during the Thirty-three Cecils Day celebration on Tuesday, September 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Belmar Pub.

Earlier that day, author Everett de Morier will host a book signing at Barnes & Noble from noon to 3 p.m., where readers can meet the author and purchase signed copies of Thirty-three Cecils.
